Regardless of variance in international codes the design philosophy of flat glass elements acting as membrane is well researched and codified. However, the design of large format profiled laminated glass acting as a deep section under long term load has limited precedence nor design nor guidance. There are many papers and test studies completed on composite sections but little has developed as design rules. The paper looks at the design requirements and design theory of large format laminated glass with a double curved cross sectional profile to act a self supporting roof element Our paper includes limits of manufacturing and the impact that this has on the design of glass under permanent creep loading as well as under transient and short term loads including thermal stress. The paper offers a design method and validation process to meet current design codes.
